Ike Followed Us Home

We ended up getting out of Houston a day early.  We woke up on Thursday and got out Houston to beat out the hurricane.  Who would have thought that it would follow us home?!?

Okay, seriously, who needs a generator in Ohio for a Hurricane?  WE DID!!!  We lost electricity for 48 hours.  I had some major computer withdraw.  No really, I had the shakes and everything.

After the walk on Sunday we headed home to grab some lunch and mow the lawn.  We “heard” that it may be a tad bit windy, but nothing too bad.  It was a beautiful morning and had such a nice breeze.  I mowed the lawn and noticed it was a little bit breezy, but nothing to be concerned about.  The kids had gone to my sisters, so I headed over to grab them.  On my way, I noticed some large bits of debris flying about and my SUV trying to swerve off the road.  Then I realized that it was a little more than breezy.  There was some major wind gusts.  My sister jumped in the car and headed over to the house with us.  After we got home, we noticed that it was now a full blown wind storm!  We came home to seat cushions and papers flying everywhere.

We got the kids inside and she went out to help me get the debris out of the yard.  The toybox had blown over and there were balls all over the yard.  Our neighbors shutters were flying off of their house and shingles were popping up off of roofs.  It was insane!  The best was watching our neighbor mow his lawn.  We were cracking up.  He said he was going to mow and he sure did, despite the 80 mph wind gusts!

We lost our power at 1:00 pm and thought for sure it was just going to be a few hours.  Well, by 6 that night we heard that it could be a few days up to a week!  The thought of losing all those frozen meals in my freezer just broke my heart.  We found out that a neighbor was driving up north to get a generator, so we asked him to grab one for us.  By 10 pm, our refrigerator and freezer were running smoothly.  Thank you Mark and Todd for driving all the way to pick those up!

We really ended up having fun.  The kids had a blast playing with all the neighborhood kids and their cousins came over.  All of the adults hung around and caught up.  Our neighbors Leeane and Duane had brewed some coffee by plugging the coffee pot into their generator, so we all drank coffee and chatted in the morning.  Mark and Debbie down in our culde sac hooked up the projector to their generator and put up the movie screen for the kids to watch last night.  The weather was perfect to spend the day outside.  It was a lot of fun, but I’m so glad that we have electricity back!!!!

Our prayers go out to all of the families that got hit by Hurricane Ike!  We just had a little taste of it here, and it was scary.  I pray for all of the people who still don’t have power or homes down south.  Our prayers go out to all of you!!

What a storm it was. Try being on a motorcycle (on the Hero’s Ride) in the middle of that mess. I thought I was in the movie twister.

That sounds pretty scarey! I’m glad you all are safe and that you found a way to make it a time of gathering and sharing and making memories!
